FM300 / Frequency multiplication

FM300
frequency tripler

The FM300 converts a specified input frequency to a sinewave output at three times that frequency. Input conditioning, harmonic selection and output drive are included in the module, with filtering configured for the required conversion.

Circuit functions

An Engineered Signal Chain

The FM300 uses input conditioning, harmonic selection, and an output amplifier to produce a usable tripled-frequency signal. These functions are built into the module, along with the filtering and interfaces needed to connect it to the source and load.

Input conditioning

Coupling, termination and bias establish the RF loading and the operating point at the limiter input.

Harmonic generation

The limiting stage produces a switching waveform containing the third harmonic, along with other frequency components.

Third-harmonic selection

The interstage filter passes the required band around the third harmonic and attenuates separated unwanted components.

Output conditioning and drive

An active stage drives the output filter. Coupling and attenuation complete the interface to the specified load.

Input Waveform and Loading

The source, coupling network, and input load determine the signal at the limiter. Sufficient amplitude and slew rate ensure reliable switching.

Harmonic Selection and Drive

The interstage filter selects the third harmonic and couples it to the output amplifier. The filter and amplifier stages are designed together, accounting for their impedances and loading.

Power and Connections

Onboard regulation and decoupling supply the active stages. RF connectors and DC power connections simplify bench evaluation and installation in equipment.

Configuration

Frequency Selection and Harmonic Filtering

The FM300’s filters are selected for the required input and output frequencies. They pass the desired third harmonic while attenuating unwanted frequency components.

Each module is configured for the customer’s specified input and output frequencies.

Output drive and filtering

Filtering Before and After Amplification

The interstage filter selects the third harmonic from the input limiting stage and feeds it to the output amplifier.

Amplification can introduce additional harmonics, so a second filter reduces these components to provide a clean sine-wave output at the desired frequency.
