What Are Zero-Dead-Time Readings?
In RF test and measurement systems, zero-dead-time readings refer to continuous data collection where every cycle is counted without missing even a single cycle of the signal. Unlike traditional systems that may introduce pauses or gaps between measurements, zero-dead-time ensures seamless data acquisition across all cycles of the signal, critical for precise RF analysis.
Why Are They Necessary?
For highly accurate measurements, especially in applications like Allan Deviation (ADEV), Maximum Time Interval Error (MTIE), Time Deviation (TDEV), and other frequency stability or timing metrics, zero dead time readings are essential. These statistical analyses depend on uninterrupted data to deliver accurate evaluations of frequency stability, jitter, and timing errors. Missing even one cycle can invalidate the statistical reliability of the results, potentially compromising the entirety of the test being performed.

Why Choose Zero Dead Time Systems?
Zero dead time counters are typically available as single-channel instruments, meaning that to build a complete RF test system, you would usually need to design and assemble it yourself. This can be a time-consuming and resource-intensive process, especially when accuracy and multi-channel capabilities are crucial. However, ERD test systems offer a powerful solution, enabling hundreds of channels of simultaneous zero dead time readings.
